In the upcoming “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” set to release on May 23, 2025, Tom Cruise continues to push the boundaries of action cinema.
At 62, Cruise remains committed to performing his own stunts, a hallmark of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise.
However, during the filming of a particularly demanding sequence, the actor faced significant physical challenges.
In one of the film’s most anticipated scenes, Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt, is depicted clinging to the wing of a 1930s Boeing Stearman biplane,
soaring at an altitude of approximately 10,000 feet and speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour.
The high velocity and thin atmosphere at this elevation posed severe breathing difficulties.
Cruise explained, “When you stick your face out, going over 120 to 130 miles an hour, you’re not getting oxygen. So I had to train myself how to breathe. There were times I would pass out physically; I was unable to get back into the cockpit.”
Director Christopher McQuarrie, who has collaborated with Cruise on multiple installments of the franchise, lauded the actor’s dedication. He remarked, “There are stunts in this movie that will melt your brain.” McQuarrie highlighted the rigorous demands of the production, noting that Cruise consistently undertook challenges that surpassed his previous feats.
Cruise’s commitment to performing his own stunts has been a defining feature of his career. In “Mission: Impossible – Fallout,” he executed a HALO (High Altitude, Low Opening) jump, a maneuver typically reserved for military operations, which required him to leap from a plane at 25,000 feet and delay deploying his parachute until close to the ground. This dedication to authenticity has become a signature of the franchise, with each film introducing increasingly ambitious stunts.
The actor’s willingness to undertake such perilous sequences underscores his passion for delivering immersive cinematic experiences. As “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” approaches its release, audiences eagerly anticipate witnessing the culmination of Cruise’s relentless pursuit of action excellence.
