Lily Allen Confirms Seeking Treatment for ‘Emotional Turmoil’ After David Harbour Split
Lily Allen is opening up about her journey toward healing following her separation from husband David Harbour.
The British singer-songwriter confirmed that she recently checked herself into a treatment facility to address her mental health struggles,
sharing details during the latest episode of her Miss Me? podcast on Thursday.
After taking a month-long break from her podcast, Allen, 39, returned to discuss her personal struggles and the steps she has taken to regain emotional stability.
“I just feel very grateful to have been given the time and the space that I needed,” she told listeners. “I went into a sort of treatment center for a few weeks, which was great.”
Focusing on Mental Health Through Therapy
Allen revealed that during her stay, she engaged in extensive therapy—both in group sessions and one-on-one counseling. She described her time at the facility as an opportunity to step away from the outside world and focus entirely on her well-being.
“I did a lot of group therapy and some individual therapy, and I just needed some time and space away from everything,” she explained.
The Smile singer also delved into the deeper emotional work she undertook during treatment. She described her journey as a difficult but necessary process, saying, “I did a lot of shadow work about inner child stuff, which was not easy by any stretch.”
While acknowledging that personal growth and healing are lifelong endeavors, Allen shared that she has already made significant changes to her daily routine. She has incorporated meditation and medication into her life to help maintain her mental and emotional well-being.
A Mother’s Motivation to Heal
One of the driving forces behind Allen’s decision to seek professional help was her role as a mother. She shares two daughters, 13-year-old Ethel Mary and 12-year-old Marnie Rose, with ex-husband Sam Cooper. Allen expressed that she wanted to ensure she was in a strong and stable place for her children.
“I absolutely adore my children, and I’m in a situation now where I really have to be my strongest self for them,” she said. “And I felt like it was getting harder and harder for me to be able to show up for them in the way that they need me to.”
Although it was difficult to temporarily step away from her daughters, Allen knew that prioritizing her mental health would ultimately benefit them as well. “It was a really big decision to have to leave them for a few weeks to go and focus on myself, but ultimately it was for them,” she explained. “Yes, it’s for me, but it’s for them so that I can get us through this bit. I needed some help to be able to do that.”
She emphasized that as a parent, it is her responsibility to provide a safe and stable environment for her children, not the other way around.
“I just don’t think I was able to do that because of the sort of emotional turmoil that I was in at the time,” she admitted. “But I do feel like I am now. I‘m not saying I’m 100% there, and I’m not saying that I’m getting it 100% right or ever will, but I’m definitely in a stronger place.”
A Fresh Start Following Her Split from Harbour
Allen’s recent challenges follow reports of her split from actor David Harbour, whom she married in 2020. While she did not directly mention Harbour in her podcast, she alluded to the emotional difficulties she had been experiencing, which ultimately led her to seek help.
Though she did not specify the exact timeline of her treatment stay, Allen hinted that she was released within the past week. Now, she is focusing on moving forward with healthier habits and a renewed perspective.
Her candid revelation about seeking professional help highlights the importance of prioritizing mental health, especially during major life changes. By openly discussing her journey, Allen hopes to encourage others to seek support when they need it.
As she continues to navigate this new chapter in her life, Allen is embracing the changes she has made and the lessons she has learned along the way.
