Blue Ivy Carter, 13, and her younger twin siblings, Rumi and Sir Carter, 7, may be growing up in the spotlight thanks to their superstar parents, Beyoncé and Jay-Z,
but they also have a tight-knit family looking out for them.
While Beyoncé and Jay-Z have made efforts to give their children as normal a life as possible, their cousin, Julez Smith,
recently opened up about his role as a protective older family member.
Julez Smith: The Protective Older Cousin
Julez Smith, the 20-year-old son of Beyoncé’s younger sister, Solange Knowles, is not only an aspiring model but also a devoted cousin.
In his first-ever interview with Teen Vogue, Julez shared insights into his personal journey, career aspirations, and, most importantly, his close relationship with his younger cousins.
“It’s been protector mode since everybody was born,” Julez said during the interview. “Just trying to be a positive role model as they get older. I think that’s been my main goal.”
For Julez, being the oldest among his cousins means setting an example and being someone they can look up to. “I’m really close to my family,” he added. “So being the oldest is like, I got to set the tone, set the standard for them, make sure I’m in the same direction that I would want them to go.”
The Bond Between Julez and His Younger Cousins
Julez also shared a heartfelt moment about how his younger cousins, including Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir, are now realizing just how much he’s grown up.
“They’re asking me questions like, ‘You drive now?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m 20 now. I ain’t the same 15-year-old when you were born, you feel me.’ But that type of stuff warms my heart, just knowing that my younger folks in my family look up to me and I’m a role model to them.”
It’s clear that while Blue Ivy has been making headlines for her recent performances alongside her mother, and the twins are still growing up away from the limelight, they have an older cousin who is committed to guiding and protecting them.
Julez’s Growing Public Presence
Though Julez has largely stayed out of the public eye for most of his life, he has been stepping into the spotlight more recently. In 2023, he engaged with fans on TikTok, where he answered questions about his famous family.
One fan asked, “Do you and Beyoncé text?” to which Julez responded with a touch of humor: “Do you text your aunt? I feel like everyone texts their aunt.” He then added, “I don’t look at her as… I mean, of course, I know, but bro, that’s just like my auntie. Just like how your auntie is your auntie.”
Despite being related to one of the biggest stars in the world, Julez clearly sees Beyoncé in a familial light rather than as a global icon. His down-to-earth response showcased the strong and normal family dynamic within the Knowles-Carter clan.
A Close-Knit Family With Strong Support
Beyond his relationship with Beyoncé and her children, Julez is also incredibly close to his grandmother, Tina Knowles. The family matriarch has frequently expressed pride in her grandson, sharing behind-the-scenes moments of his life on social media.
Most recently, she posted footage of Julez backstage at Paris Fashion Week, highlighting his confidence and growing presence in the fashion world. As he continues to establish his own identity and career, his strong family ties remain a guiding force in his life.
Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir’s Life in the Public Eye
Despite their parents’ efforts to maintain a level of privacy, Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir have occasionally been seen at high-profile events. Blue Ivy, in particular, has been making a name for herself, performing alongside Beyoncé on the Renaissance tour and appearing at major award shows.
Recently, Blue Ivy and her sister, Rumi, attended the Super Bowl with their father, Jay-Z, drawing attention as fans noticed the family’s growing bond. However, their brother, Sir, was noticeably absent from the event, sparking curiosity among fans.
Looking Ahead
As Julez continues to carve out his own path in the modeling world, it’s evident that he remains deeply connected to his family. His recent interview not only shed light on his personal ambitions but also reinforced the strong protective bond he shares with his younger cousins.
With such a supportive and loving family around them, Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir Carter are sure to grow up with a strong sense of identity, grounded in both their parents’ legacy and the unwavering support of their relatives.
