Jon Kay from BBC Breakfast brought co-host Sarah Campbell to tears on air after announcing the UK had lost A GENIUS. What’s the story?

BBC Breakfast presenter Jon Kay took a moment during Wednesday’s broadcast to deliver somber news to viewers.

Co-hosting alongside Sarah Campbell, Jon announced the passing of Rick Buckler, the drummer of the legendary British rock band, The Jam.

As the show aired on February 19, the atmosphere grew heavy with emotion when Jon interrupted the usual programming to share the heartbreaking update.

With a solemn expression, he stated, “It’s quarter past seven, and some sad news.

Rick Buckler, a drummer with The Jam, has died at the age of 69.”

Honoring Rick Buckler’s Legacy

To pay tribute to Rick’s influential career, the program featured an archival clip of him performing with The Jam. Sarah Campbell reflected on his impact, noting, “He was part of the band’s classic line-up alongside bass player Bruce Foxton and lead singer and guitarist Paul Weller, who said he was ‘shocked and saddened’ by the news,” as reported by Express.

After the tribute segment, Jon Kay concluded the coverage by solemnly stating, “Rick Buckler there,” allowing a moment of reflection for the viewers.

A Short Illness Ends a Musical Era

Rick Buckler passed away following a brief illness, leaving behind an enduring musical legacy. He was an integral part of The Jam from its inception in 1972 until the group disbanded in 1982. Although the band never reunited in full, Rick remained active in music, often collaborating with his former bandmate Bruce Foxton.

During their prime, The Jam released six studio albums, with Buckler’s drumming prowess showcased in critically acclaimed records such as All Mod Cons (1978) and Sound Affects (1980). The band dominated the UK music scene, achieving 18 consecutive Top 40 hits, including four chart-topping singles. Their albums, particularly The Gift, reached number one, solidifying their place in rock history.

Paul Weller Pays Tribute to His Former Bandmate

The Jam’s frontman, Paul Weller, expressed his sorrow over Rick’s passing in a heartfelt Facebook post. “I’m shocked and saddened by Rick’s passing. I’m thinking back to us all rehearsing in my bedroom in Stanley Road, Woking,” he wrote.

Reflecting on their journey, Weller reminisced about their early days performing in pubs and clubs before gaining widespread recognition. “To eventually making a record—what a journey!” he continued. He acknowledged the impact they had on the music industry, saying, “We went far beyond our dreams, and what we made stands the test of time.”

Weller concluded his tribute by extending his condolences to Rick’s family and friends, signing off with “P.W x.”

Remembering a Rock Legend

Rick Buckler’s contribution to The Jam and the broader music industry remains undeniable. Songs such as Town Called Malice, Going Underground, and Down In The Tube Station At Midnight continue to resonate with fans decades after their release.

While the news of his passing has saddened many, his legacy as a pioneering drummer in one of Britain’s most influential bands will forever be remembered.
