Longtime fans of The View are used to Whoopi Goldberg occasionally being absent from the show due to various commitments,
but her recent disappearance from the moderator’s seat took viewers by surprise.
On Wednesday, February 19, the 69-year-old actress and talk show host was noticeably missing from the panel without prior announcement,
leaving Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, and Alyssa Farah Griffin to carry on without her.
At the start of the episode, Behar, who stepped in as moderator, addressed Whoopi’s absence to the audience, revealing the reason behind it.
“Unfortunately, I know you’ll be unhappy, but Whoopi is not here with us,” she said before sharing, “She has the flu.”
She also took a moment to send well wishes, adding, “Feel better, Whoops. We miss you. Come back as soon as you can.”
Alyssa Farah Griffin also commented on the flu “going around,” advising viewers to take precautions by regularly sanitizing and thoroughly washing their hands. Meanwhile, Sara Haines lightheartedly suggested that people should “avoid being around children” to minimize the risk of catching the illness.
Goldberg’s sudden absence came as a surprise, as she had been present for the previous day’s episode on Tuesday, February 18, without mentioning any upcoming time off. Typically, the EGOT-winning actress takes Fridays off, and when she plans to miss an episode, she gives her audience advance notice. This unplanned departure, however, had fans speculating about her condition and hoping for her swift recovery.
While Whoopi is known for her resilience, it remains unclear how long she will be out. Given that she already has Fridays off, viewers may not see her return until sometime next week, depending on how she feels.
This latest absence comes shortly after Goldberg made headlines for a surprising revelation during the SNL50: The Anniversary Special on Sunday, February 16. While speaking on the red carpet, she explained why she has never hosted Saturday Night Live, a gig many celebrities consider a career milestone. “It required a week, it required you to sit with people and write sketches, and I didn’t really have the time. And I didn’t want to do that, I’d been doing that for years,” she explained. “I just wanted to work on my own.”
Fans of The View are eagerly awaiting Goldberg’s return and have taken to social media to send their well wishes. Many expressed their concern, while others shared their hopes that she takes the necessary time to rest and fully recover before coming back to the show. Given her usual energy and presence on the panel, her absence is certainly felt.
For now, her co-hosts are keeping things running smoothly, but there’s no doubt that the show isn’t quite the same without Whoopi at the helm. Whether she returns next week or takes additional time off, viewers will be looking forward to seeing her back in her rightful seat, bringing her signature wit and insight to the table.
