Chris Packham could have jeopardized his career by supporting extreme protests live on GMB. Why did he take that risk?

Chris Packham found himself at the center of a heated debate on Good Morning Britain after defending the actions of Just Stop Oil protestors.

The 63-year-old naturalist and broadcaster appeared on the ITV morning show to discuss the legal appeals of 16 climate activists,

who were handed prison sentences ranging from 15 months to five years for their involvement in disruptive protests,

including blocking the M25 and defacing Van Gogh paintings at the National Gallery in 2022.

Viewers were quick to react, with many branding Packham an “absolute joke” for his stance, while others praised him for speaking out on climate issues.

Packham Argues Protestors Are Being Unfairly Punished

During the discussion with hosts Richard Madeley, 68, and Susanna Reid, 54, Packham expressed his belief that the sentencing of the protestors was excessive. He argued that peaceful climate activists were receiving harsher punishments than some violent offenders, stating, “My objection is that we have an overcrowded prison system. Here we have peaceful climate protestors being put in jail for unduly long sentences—some have received sentences longer than those given for violent crimes or sex offences.”

Packham went on to say that the activists were being “targeted and victimized” despite their right to protest peacefully. He emphasized that climate change is “the greatest danger of our age” and that protests serve to bring attention to the crisis.

He continued, “Frankly, they are clambering to get media attention to communicate this to an increasingly concerned public.”

Richard Madeley Challenges Packham

Richard Madeley pushed back on Packham’s argument, posing a hypothetical scenario in which someone died as a direct result of being stuck in traffic caused by a protest.

“If somebody had died, your response to their family would be, ‘Well, traffic jams happen’? It could have been a traffic jam caused by an accident, for any other reason—sorry about that, that’s life. It’s an extraordinary piece of logic.”

Packham was quick to defend his stance, stating, “Not really, Richard. My sympathies would be unbounded when it comes to anyone affected by a tragedy like that, and you well know it.” He then shifted the focus to the larger global climate crisis, arguing that billions of lives are at risk due to environmental disasters.

“Look at the tragedy happening overseas in California, look at the magnitude of the calamity facing humanity. We’re not just talking about individuals in ambulances as an artifact of a protest—we’re talking about billions of people whose lives are currently at risk.”

Packham concluded that protestors must have a “peaceful right” to bring awareness to the climate crisis and combat misinformation in the media.

Viewers Divided Over Packham’s Comments

Following the heated discussion, Good Morning Britain viewers took to social media to share their opinions, with many criticizing Packham for defending disruptive protests that have caused widespread public frustration.

One viewer tweeted, “Chris Packham has made average people hate him and his Just Stop Oil mates… #GMB.”

Another wrote, “Got no sympathy for them when it stops the emergency services. #GMB.”

A third chimed in, “Used to like Packham back in the day, now an absolute joke. #GMB.”

Others expressed anger over the inconvenience caused by Just Stop Oil protests, with one viewer questioning, “What about those that missed weddings, funerals, important hospital appointments? Don’t they matter?”

However, some viewers defended Packham’s position, believing that the climate activists were receiving disproportionately harsh punishments.

One supporter tweeted, “History will be on the side of Chris Packham, who is highlighting the dangerous future our planet is hurtling towards.”

Another pointed out the disparity in sentencing, writing, “Five years is outrageous. You don’t have to agree with them to see that five years for a non-violent crime is disgusting and clearly used to set an example. We have rapists and domestic abusers doing less time than someone taking part in a non-violent protest. #GMB.”

A third viewer criticized the show’s handling of the discussion, tweeting, “I understand the concern about the targets for Just Stop Oil protests, but this is very unbalanced presenting from GMB.”

The Debate Over Climate Protests Continues

The debate surrounding climate protests remains a contentious issue in the UK. While some argue that disruptive demonstrations are necessary to draw attention to the urgent climate crisis, others believe such actions alienate the public and create unnecessary chaos.

Chris Packham’s appearance on Good Morning Britain has only fueled this divide, with viewers split between those who see him as a passionate environmental advocate and those who view his defense of Just Stop Oil as out of touch with the everyday struggles of the public.

With climate activism continuing to make headlines, it’s clear that this debate is far from over.
