Al Roker from TODAY confessed feeling nauseous appearing on the show: “It makes me sick…”

Al Roker and his wife, Deborah Roberts, experienced a bittersweet moment over the weekend as they dropped off their son, Nick, for his junior year of college.

The Today show star and his journalist wife have always been open about their deep love for family, making this moment both emotional and significant for them.

A Memorable Summer with Family

Before Nick returned to school, Al enjoyed a wonderful summer filled with quality family time. He traveled to Paris to visit his daughter, Leila, who has been living there for several years.

The time spent together was undoubtedly precious, especially as his children grow older and begin building their own lives.

In addition to his trip to France, Al was able to spend valuable time with Nick while he was home from college.

The Roker family has always been close-knit, and their bond was evident throughout the summer months. However, as the new academic year approached, the inevitable reality of Nick’s return to school set in.

A Quiet Home Once Again

The emotional moment was captured in photos shared on Instagram, where Al and Deborah documented the move-in process. They were seen helping Nick settle into his dorm room, making his bed, and unpacking his belongings.

After saying their goodbyes, Al posted a heartfelt message reflecting on the moment. “Dropped Nick off this afternoon. Hard to believe we have a college junior!! House is a little too quiet,” he wrote.

Deborah also took to social media to share her thoughts, posting a touching photo of herself hugging Nick before they parted ways. In her caption, she expressed the emotions that come with being empty nesters once again. “Well, that’s that. Move in, done. Nest is empty again. Certainly not as bad as year one. Yet, our hearts are sagging a bit. But his smile ensures that we will all be okay. Here’s to a great junior year, Nick. #emptynest #college #drop.”

Parents Relate to the Emotional Farewell

Al’s post struck a chord with fellow parents who could relate to the emotions of dropping their children off at college. Many flooded the comments with supportive messages, sharing their own experiences of facing an empty home after their children left for school.

One follower commented, “The quiet is deafening, no doubt. Don’t forget to enjoy your journey as well as Nick’s!” Another added, “The walk back into the quiet house is not for the faint of heart.”

Taking Time for Family

Al, who is typically a staple on Today, took a brief break from the show on Monday to spend time with his family before returning on Tuesday. He made the most of his day off by visiting his oldest daughter, Courtney, and her baby daughter, Sky. Sharing a sweet photo of his granddaughter, he wrote, “She’s just pure joy.”

Family has always been a priority for Al and Deborah, and their social media pages frequently highlight their love for one another. Their pride in Nick’s journey has been evident since he started college in 2022, and they have been open about the emotions of watching him grow and become more independent.

A Journey of Hard Work and Determination

Nick’s journey to college has been one of perseverance and dedication. Al has spoken openly about his son’s achievements, sharing that Nick is on the autism spectrum and may have obsessive-compulsive tendencies. However, despite the challenges, Nick has excelled academically and personally.

During a segment on Today in June 2022, Al reflected on the moment his son first went off to college, saying, “It was difficult. We’re so proud of him, all the work he’s done, the people who have helped him along the way. It literally does take a village. It was a terrific moment, and he’s put in so much hard work. I’m just so very proud of this young man. Of course, Deborah, his mom, did the lion’s share of the work.”

Looking Ahead to New Beginnings

Although sending Nick back to school is an emotional transition, Al and Deborah are finding comfort in knowing that their son is thriving. They have embraced this new phase in their lives, cherishing the memories they make whenever the family is together.

As Nick embarks on his junior year, Al and Deborah remain steadfast in their support, celebrating his achievements and looking forward to his continued growth. While their home may be quieter, their hearts are full, knowing that their son is on a path to success.
