Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are still grieving the loss of their beloved family pet, Chewie, who had been a cherished part of their lives for 17 years.
The couple, who co-host “Live with Kelly and Mark,” first shared the heartbreaking news of their Shih Tzu’s passing earlier in February.
The announcement came after Chewie stopped eating and became severely dehydrated, leading to the difficult decision to say goodbye.
On a recent episode of their talk show, Kelly and Mark reflected on Chewie’s final moments while discussing a fascinating article from the New York Post.
The piece focused on a unique brainwave pattern, Gamma synchrony, which some experts believe could be evidence of the soul leaving the body at the moment of death.
Reading from the article, Mark shared: “A spike in the end-of-life brain activity could be evidence of the soul leaving the body, experts say.”
He continued, quoting Dr. Stuart Hameroff: “A flare of energy in the brain of a dying patient who had no blood pressure or heart rate could be evidence that the soul leaves the body after death. Isn’t that wild?”
Kelly, clearly moved by the study’s findings, responded, “That is wild… I don’t know what to think about that.” She then drew a connection between the research and her own experience with Chewie’s passing.
“Right before Chewie took her final breath, she got a little burst of energy. Do you remember? And we were like, ‘Oh my gosh, everything’s going to be okay.’ There was a moment where we really thought, ‘Okay, whatever she was going through for the past few weeks, it’s over now,’” Kelly shared. “But it was just… I think it was that. It was exactly that. She got this burst of energy, maybe.”
The couple first announced Chewie’s passing on air in early February, sharing their emotional farewell with viewers. Mark revealed that they had to euthanize Chewie at their New York City apartment, explaining that her health had declined significantly.
“We had a rough day yesterday. We had to say goodbye to Chewie,” Mark said somberly. “She had stopped eating for a couple of days and had been eating less and less for the past few weeks. She was extremely dehydrated and had some neurological stuff going on.”
Mark went on to describe the deep emotional toll of losing a pet. “And you think, ‘Okay, I’m doing the right thing, this is going to be not easy but…’ It’s probably one of the toughest things we’ve had to do as a married couple.”
Understanding the unique pain that comes with the loss of a pet, Mark empathized with other pet owners. “I know pet owners at home can understand this. It takes a pet owner to truly grasp this kind of loss. It’s grief. It really is grief. But knowing that we did the right thing, because it was just going to be really, really bad over the next few days for her, brings some comfort.”
During the segment, Kelly couldn’t hold back her emotions. She wiped away tears as she spoke about the deep bond they had shared with Chewie over the years.
“She gave us so much,” Kelly said through her tears. “We’re filled with gratitude for this dog. As each one of our kids left for college and moved out on their own, Chewie remained right there. Our steadfast companion.”
The Ripa-Consuelos household is still home to another dog, Lena, a Maltese Shih Tzu mix they adopted in 2021. While Lena brings them joy, Chewie’s absence is deeply felt in their home.
Kelly and Mark’s heartfelt tribute to their longtime pet resonated with many viewers, as fans flooded social media with condolences and personal stories of losing their own pets. Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the deep emotional connections people share with their furry companions and the profound impact pets have on family life.
Though they continue to mourn, the couple takes comfort in the many years of love and memories they shared with Chewie. Her presence in their lives will always be cherished, and her memory will forever remain a part of their family’s story.
