Amy Schumer has opened up about her difficult experience with Ozempic, a weight-loss medication that has recently gained widespread attention.
The comedian, who is known for her candidness, shared her scary side effects from using the drug, revealing how it left her feeling completely bedridden.
Schumer, 43, tried Ozempic in 2023 with the goal of losing weight, but her experience quickly took a turn for the worse.
Speaking on The Howard Stern Show, Schumer explained that her body’s unique genetic makeup may have played a role in how she reacted to the drug.
“I have this gene – GDF15 – which makes you extremely prone to nausea, which is why I was so sick during my pregnancy,” Schumer said.
She went on to explain that after trying Ozempic, she became severely ill.
“I was bedridden, vomiting, and had no energy,” she said. “Other people take it and they’re all good, but it just didn’t work for me.”
Despite the severe side effects, Schumer noted that she did experience rapid weight loss. “I lost 30 pounds so quick,” she recalled. “I looked great, but I couldn’t lift my head off the pillow, so what’s the point?” Schumer’s admission sheds light on the harsh realities that come with certain weight-loss medications, despite their popularity among celebrities.
Ozempic, which contains the active ingredient semaglutide, was initially approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. However, in recent years, the drug has been widely used off-label for weight loss purposes, with celebrities and regular users alike flocking to it in hopes of shedding pounds quickly.
Schumer’s story is not unique, as other celebrities have also opened up about their experiences with the medication. In 2023, Schumer publicly criticized those who falsely claimed to lose weight through “smaller portions” while secretly using Ozempic or similar drugs. During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live!, she urged others to be honest about their weight-loss methods. “Like, shut the f— up!” she said. “You are on Ozempic or one of those things, or you got work done. Just stop.”
Schumer also shared how the side effects affected her ability to engage with her young son, Gene, who is now 4 years old. “I was so skinny, and he’s throwing a ball at me and I couldn’t [play],” she explained. “And you’re like, ‘OK, this isn’t livable for me.’”
It seems Schumer was not alone in her struggles with Ozempic. Talk show host James Corden also admitted to trying the drug, but explained that it didn’t work for him. In a recent episode of his This Life of Mine podcast, Corden revealed that his experience with Ozempic left him frustrated. “I tried it for a bit, and then what I realized was I was like, ‘Oh no, nothing about my eating has anything to do with being hungry,’” Corden shared. “All this does is make you feel not hungry. But I am very rarely eating [because of hunger].”
Corden’s comments reflect the broader conversation surrounding Ozempic and other weight-loss medications. While these drugs have gained popularity for their ability to curb appetite and promote weight loss, many people, including celebrities, are finding that the side effects can sometimes outweigh the benefits.
Schumer’s experience has sparked a wider discussion about the pressures placed on women in the entertainment industry to maintain a certain physique, and the lengths some may go to in order to achieve it. In her case, the side effects were so extreme that the medication’s rapid results weren’t worth the toll it took on her body.
Despite her personal experience with Ozempic, Schumer continues to advocate for body positivity and openness in the face of societal beauty standards. She’s been vocal about embracing her body as it is, and her cautionary tale serves as a reminder that quick fixes aren’t always the answer. For now, Schumer seems content with embracing a healthier lifestyle without relying on weight-loss drugs that come with significant risks.
As more people, including celebrities, share their experiences with Ozempic and other similar medications, it becomes clear that the conversation surrounding weight loss is far from one-size-fits-all
