Former Disney star Christy Carlson Romano, best known for her role on Even Stevens,
recently opened up about a terrifying incident that nearly cost her an eye.
Romano, 40, was participating in a clay pigeon shooting activity with her husband, Brendan Rooney, to celebrate his birthday
when an unsafe shot from another party resulted in multiple injuries to her face.
In an emotional Instagram video posted on Saturday, Romano detailed the injuries she sustained during the outing, which took place in Austin, Texas.
She shared that the accident occurred when another group, who was shooting nearby, “unsafely fired in the wrong direction,” causing her to be struck in the face.
Romano was hit in five different places, with one shot coming dangerously close to her right eye.
“I got shot in the eye. It was not fun,” Romano explained, her voice shaky as she pointed to a swollen wound under her right eye. “It is still inside,” she continued, referring to a bullet fragment lodged behind her eye. The injury left her with visible bruising and a blood-filled swelling in her eye.
Romano went on to show other marks on her face, including a fragment wound near her forehead. She expressed her gratitude for the prompt medical care she received, saying, “I’m very grateful to first responders as a whole. I mean, they’re just the most amazing superheroes to take care of us at our most desperate times.”
Despite the traumatic experience, Romano thanked the staff at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, where she received treatment. “This was really bad tonight,” she acknowledged, but added that she was grateful to have survived the ordeal. “I got shot in the face. And live to tell the tale,” she remarked, reminding her followers to appreciate every day.
In her post’s caption, Romano shared further details of the accident, explaining that the clay pigeon shooting outing was meant to be a fun birthday present for her husband. However, the day quickly turned tragic when the other party’s actions led to her injury. “There was another party with us and they unsafely fired in the wrong direction and shot me in the face,” she wrote.
Romano’s husband, Brendan Rooney, immediately sprang into action following the incident, assessing her injuries and rushing her to the hospital. According to Romano, she was struck in five places, one of which was less than an inch from her right eye. “Unfortunately, a fragment got lodged behind my eye, and it is too risky to remove surgically at this time,” she explained. Doctors have decided to monitor the situation, as the risk of further complications is high. Romano reassured fans that, despite everything, she is able to see normally for the moment.
In the wake of the incident, Romano expressed how grateful she felt to be alive. “With everything that happened, all I can think about is how grateful I am to be alive,” she reflected. “I love my daughters, husband, family, and friends so much.” Romano went on to share how the frightening moment made her realize how precious life is, emphasizing, “I saw my life flash before my eyes and I’m telling you, hug the people around you every chance you can. Life can change in an instant.”
Romano and Rooney first met in February 2011 and tied the knot in December 2013. Together, they have two daughters, Isabella Victoria, 8, and Sophia Elizabeth, 5. Despite the harrowing accident, Romano’s family has rallied around her, and Rooney shared a heartfelt tribute in the comments of her post. “You are the bravest, toughest, most stoic and badass woman I have ever met,” he wrote, showing his unwavering support for his wife.
Romano’s frightening experience serves as a stark reminder of how quickly life can change, and her message about cherishing every moment resonates with many. The accident also highlights the importance of safety in activities like shooting sports, and Romano’s thankful attitude after the ordeal speaks to her strength and resilience. Despite the injuries, she remains thankful for the support of her loved ones and the first responders who helped her through a life-threatening situation.
