Good Morning Britain (GMB) has come under fire from viewers after presenters Susanna Reid 

and Ed Balls appeared to dismiss the idea of a four-day work week during a debate on Wednesday’s show. 

Critics were quick to point out the irony, noting that the hosts themselves do not work full five-day weeks, with some even joking about the “cheek” of their comments.

The Heated Discussion on GMB

The segment featured The Apprentice star Tre Lowe and former Conservative advisor Charlie Rowley, who debated the pros and cons of a four-day working week. 

This discussion followed a push from Labour MPs who are advocating for a reduction in working hours as part of broader reforms to employment rights.

A dozen Labour MPs, along with a Green MP, have called for the government to establish a committee to explore the feasibility of a nationwide four-day work week without a reduction in pay. The proposed amendment to the Employment Rights Bill suggests that an expert panel should assess how such a transition could be implemented.

However, the GMB hosts appeared skeptical about the idea. Susanna Reid, a long-time anchor of the show, argued that reducing the working week would result in lost productivity. “You’ve got a day where there’s no work being done!” she exclaimed, making her stance on the issue clear.

Viewers Call Out the Presenters’ Work Schedules

Despite the debate being framed as a discussion about broader economic and societal implications, many viewers took issue with the presenters themselves, accusing them of hypocrisy. Critics noted that some of the show’s regular hosts, including Reid, do not work a full five-day schedule.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), one viewer quipped:

“A three-day work week if your name is Susanna Reid. A one-day week if your name is Lorraine. Minimum salary £800k.”

Others mocked the segment’s tone, writing:

“The cheek of this lot laughing at the idea of a four-day week. The irony! #GMB.”

“So, does this mean Susanna gets an extra day off?”

The backlash highlighted viewers’ frustration at what they saw as a disconnect between the presenters and the average worker. Many pointed out that high-paid TV personalities already enjoy flexibility in their schedules, making it unfair for them to criticize a policy that could benefit regular employees.

The Push for a Four-Day Work Week

The idea of a shorter working week has gained traction in recent years, with proponents arguing that it could lead to increased productivity, improved mental health, and a better work-life balance. Supporters say that technological advancements, including artificial intelligence and automation, allow workers to be more efficient, and the benefits should be passed on in the form of reduced hours.

Labour MP Peter Dowd, who proposed the amendment, emphasized the potential advantages, stating:

“We must ensure that advancements in efficiency benefit workers, not just employers. A four-day work week could improve well-being and prevent burnout while maintaining productivity.”

Government Resistance and Economic Concerns

However, the proposal faces strong opposition from the Conservative government, which argues that such a shift could harm businesses. A spokesperson for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak made it clear that Downing Street does not support a nationwide four-day work week, stating:

“Our plans on the Employment Rights Bill are set out in public and there is no deviation from that. It is not Government policy to support a general move to a four-day working week for five days working pay.”

Critics of the proposal, including some business leaders, warn that reducing working hours without adjusting wages could place a heavy burden on employers, potentially leading to job losses and economic downturns. The Tories have likened the policy to “French-style” labor laws, which they claim could stifle business growth.

Mixed Public Reaction

While some viewers of Good Morning Britain were critical of the presenters’ stance, opinions on a four-day work week remain divided. Many workers argue that a shorter work week would enhance their quality of life, while others fear that it could lead to increased workloads and unrealistic expectations in fewer hours.

Companies that have trialed four-day work weeks in the UK and abroad have reported largely positive outcomes, including happier employees, lower absenteeism, and maintained or even improved productivity. However, without government backing, widespread implementation remains uncertain.
