NO PUSHOVER: Novak Djokovic made a firm statement about never doing an on-court interview at the Australian Open again after feeling deeply disrespected: “What I need is an apology…”

Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, made headlines at the 2025 Australian Open

after choosing to forgo a traditional on-court interview following his fourth-round victory against Czech player Jiri Lehecka.

The reason for Djokovic’s decision was his dissatisfaction with remarks made by a sports journalist from Channel 9, the official broadcaster of the tournament.

The Serbian tennis star felt that the comments made earlier in the week were not only insulting but offensive.

In a press conference after his win, Djokovic explained the situation, citing that a well-known sports journalist from Channel 9 had mocked his Serbian fans

and directed disparaging remarks toward him.

e was referring to Channel 9’s Tony Jones, who had come under fire for comments made during a segment that aired on Friday. The segment featured footage of Serbian fans at Melbourne Park, and Jones was heard saying, “Novak, he’s overrated. … Novak’s a has-been. Novak, kick him out. Boy, I’m glad they can’t hear me.” The broadcaster’s words, which were captured on-air, quickly sparked backlash from Djokovic’s supporters and others.

“I have nothing against Jim Courier or the Australian public,” Djokovic said during his press conference. While Djokovic briefly addressed the crowd following his win, he opted to skip the planned interview with Jim Courier. He made it clear that his decision wasn’t aimed at the Australian public or the interviewer, but rather as a response to the incident with Channel 9. He further explained that the situation felt awkward, and although he wished to explain his reasons in the moment, he recognized that it wasn’t the right time or place to do so.

The 37-year-old tennis superstar expressed his disappointment that the journalist had not apologized publicly for the comments, nor had Channel 9 offered an apology. Djokovic emphasized that, because the network is the official broadcaster of the tournament, he felt it was necessary to take a stand and not grant interviews to Channel 9.

“I told him, you know, if you guys want to fine me for not giving an on-court interview, that’s okay, I’ll accept that ’cause I feel like this is something that needs to be done,” Djokovic shared in a video posted on his X account, elaborating on his stance. He also mentioned that he had discussed the issue with Craig Tiley, the director of the Australian Open, and was prepared to accept any consequences for his actions, as he believed it was important for the matter to be addressed.

Although Djokovic didn’t name the journalist directly in his comments, it was clear that Tony Jones’ behavior was the focal point of his frustration. His decision to skip the interview sent a strong message, and fans quickly rallied behind him, expressing their support for the tennis legend’s stance on the issue.

The controversy has added an extra layer of tension to Djokovic’s Australian Open journey, where he is aiming for an 11th title. Despite the off-court drama, the Serbian tennis icon continued his pursuit of victory on the court, delivering a commanding 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) performance in his win over Lehecka. As Djokovic moves forward in the tournament, his focus remains on his quest for another Grand Slam, but the fallout from this incident is sure to be a topic of discussion throughout the remainder of the event.

The Australian Open, known for its high profile and international coverage, has often been a platform for drama both on and off the court. However, Djokovic’s decision to stand firm on the issue and demand accountability reflects his commitment to addressing what he sees as unfair treatment. With his eyes set on the quarterfinals, where he is scheduled to face world number one Carlos Alcaraz, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold as the tournament progresses.

For now, Djokovic has made it clear that he expects an apology from Channel 9 and its presenter, and he has taken a public stand for what he believes is right. Whether or not the broadcaster will respond remains uncertain, but Djokovic’s message has certainly resonated with his fans and others who see this as a matter of principle.
