Robert De Niro brought TODAY’s Savannah Guthrie to tears with harsh criticism of her Zero Day performance: “I don’t ever want to say her name again…”

Robert De Niro Reacts to Savannah Guthrie’s Cameo in Netflix Drama Zero Day

Veteran actor Robert De Niro has given his stamp of approval to Today show host Savannah Guthrie’s cameo appearance in the newly released Netflix drama Zero Day.

The 81-year-old Academy Award winner stars in the political thriller as a former U.S. President, while Guthrie, 53, plays herself in a brief but notable scene.

During an interview on Today, Guthrie took the opportunity to ask De Niro for his thoughts on her performance. With a playful tone, she quipped, “You know I have a cameo in the role.

I’m playing the role of Savannah Guthrie. Do you have any acting notes for me?” In response,

De Niro was nothing but complimentary, stating, “I noticed that. I want to give no notes. It was very good. It was terrific.”

Guthrie then joked about her method acting approach, saying, “I’m very method. I wake up as Savannah Guthrie. I go to bed as Savannah Guthrie.” The lighthearted exchange amused both the audience and De Niro, who reiterated his praise, saying, “You were great.”

Savannah Guthrie’s Role in Zero Day

The six-episode series, which premiered on Netflix on Thursday, features a star-studded cast that includes Lizzy Caplan, Jesse Plemons, Joan Allen, Connie Britton, and Angela Bassett. De Niro leads the show as George Mullen, a respected former U.S. President tasked with investigating a catastrophic cyberattack that has plunged the country into crisis.

In her cameo, Guthrie appears in the second episode as a news anchor reporting on the fallout from the attack, known as the Zero Day event. In the broadcast, she delivers an update four days after the cyberattack, detailing the nation’s response and recovery. Her dialogue includes lines such as, “National tensions remain high since the Zero Day attack and the overall mood remains cautious, with the country slowly emerging.” She further reports on office and school reopenings, limited air travel, and reduced commuter rail services. Additionally, her segment alludes to growing suspicions that a nation-state, particularly Russia, may have been responsible for the attack.

De Niro’s First Major Television Role

Zero Day marks a significant career milestone for De Niro, as it is his first leading role in a television series. The Hollywood legend, known for his work in iconic films such as Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and The Irishman, revealed that he was drawn to the project for both its storyline and the opportunity to work in New York for an extended period.

Explaining his decision to transition to television, De Niro shared, “I was wanting to do something in New York for a few months and stay in the city, so I talked to my agent and he said a limited series would be one – something like that.” He went on to credit showrunner Eric Newman and writers Noah Oppenheim and Mike Schmidt for crafting a compelling narrative. “These guys know this world, and they did a terrific job, very smart. So I said, ‘Let me do it!’”

A Well-Received Performance

Guthrie’s brief appearance in the series has been well received, with De Niro’s endorsement adding credibility to her performance. While the seasoned journalist is no stranger to being in front of the camera, her role in Zero Day showcases her ability to seamlessly integrate into a dramatic, fictional setting.

With the show now available for streaming, audiences can witness both De Niro’s powerful performance and Guthrie’s convincing portrayal of a news anchor in a high-stakes political thriller. Zero Day is expected to captivate viewers with its gripping storyline and stellar cast, making it a must-watch for fans of political dramas.
