Savannah Guthrie, a familiar face on NBC’s Today, has announced that she will be stepping away from the morning show temporarily.
The accomplished broadcast journalist and former attorney is shifting her focus to a deeply personal project—her latest book.
With the support of her family and Today co-stars, Guthrie is embarking on a multi-city book tour, meaning viewers will soon notice her absence from their screens.
Savannah Guthrie Announces Temporary Absence from Today
On social media, Guthrie shared her exciting news with fans,
explaining that she would be taking time off from her regular hosting duties to promote her new children’s book, Mostly What God Does Is Love You.
In a heartfelt Instagram video, the Today co-anchor detailed her upcoming book tour, which will take her across multiple cities in the Midwest and East Coast.
Her tour kicks off on February 20 in Houston, Texas, before making stops in Illinois, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, with the final event scheduled in New York one week later. Throughout the tour, she will be joined by different moderators—including her husband, Michael Feldman—who will help facilitate discussions about her book and the inspiration behind it.
A Passion Project Close to Her Heart
Guthrie’s new children’s book is a companion to her #1 New York Times bestselling 2024 essay collection, Mostly What God Does. The picture book aims to introduce young readers to the concept of divine love in a simple, relatable way.
“We often tell our children how much we love them, but how different would our world be if we shared the simple truth that God loves them, too?” Guthrie explained. “This book is my way of sharing that message with the next generation so they grow up knowing how cherished they are and how, in turn, they can share that same love with others.”
Her faith plays a significant role in both her life and her writing. Speaking to Today.com, she shared how spirituality shapes her worldview. “It’s what makes me tick,” she said. “It’s what makes me joyful. It’s what helps me navigate the world and stresses and disappointments and fears.”
A Growing Interest in Writing
Although Guthrie has previously co-authored two children’s books, she admitted that her demanding schedule often prevented her from pursuing additional writing projects. “I’ve always been so busy with the Today show and I’ve got little kids, and I never really wanted to write anything,” she said.
However, her passion for this particular subject—faith—eventually led her to commit to the project. “I wasn’t sure there would be a book at the end of it, but I knew that it would be a really important path and journey to take,” she revealed.
Her first book on faith stemmed from a personal need. “I’m the person that needs to read it,” she admitted. “And so I thought, if I do, then maybe others do, too.”
Who Will Fill In for Savannah Guthrie on Today?
While Guthrie takes time off, Today viewers may be wondering who will step in during her absence. NBC has not officially announced a replacement, but co-host Craig Melvin is expected to take on a more prominent role alongside other rotating anchors.
This isn’t the first time Guthrie has taken a brief hiatus from the morning show. In the past, she has stepped away for family commitments and personal projects, always returning to her seat with fresh enthusiasm.
What’s Next for Savannah Guthrie?
Though her book tour is her immediate focus, Guthrie’s future plans remain open-ended. Given her passion for faith-based writing, it wouldn’t be surprising if she continues to explore this space further. For now, she is excited to connect with readers, share her message, and enjoy a temporary break from the fast-paced world of morning television.
With Guthrie away from Today for a short period, fans will undoubtedly miss her presence on the show. However, her absence is for a cause that’s incredibly meaningful to her—spreading love, faith, and positivity to young readers. And, as always, her Today family will be ready to welcome her back once her tour concludes.
